Abstract

This research analyzes the work of the carnival designer when the process of artification takes place in the parade created by him. As a work of Political Sociology, the carnival and the samba schools of Rio de Janeiro are observed from the perspective of capitalist production, which reconfigured the internal organization of these modern institutions and created hierarchies, where new professionals emerge through the processes of centralization and specialization . Among these, the figure of the carnival designer, who concentrates the creative processes essential to the development of the works of these institutions. This figure is analyzed here both for its external impact, with the creation of parades and images that reach and impact a larger number of people beyond the party. The work of Leandro Vieira for the G.R.E.S Estação Primeira de Mangueira exemplifies the work of the specialist (internal) and the logic of the intellectual (external). The objective is to understand the tensions that exist when acting between these two spheres, since they require the understanding of different perspectives and interests and the option, of this professional, to privilege the discourse and make the fashion shows a space for the debate of urgent social issues.
