This article deals with the conceptual elements that approximate Plato’s Republic and Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s Social Contract, expressing the political understanding of civil religion in in both texts. The comparative analysis of these works confirms that, although Rousseau coined the term and the formal concept of civil religion in the eighth chapter of the fourth book of his famous work, the founding concept of civil religion had already been presented by Plato in the exposition of the so-called myth of metals in such a way that this myth itself turns out to be the founding myth of civil religion.
