The tourist exposure to crime is an important matter for tourism development in a given territory. In a context of criminal increase and urban violence on a significant number of Mexican and Latin America cities, it is very important to know the causes and effects of illegal activities for tourism. This paper develops a qualitative analysis of the type of crime against tourists, of the spaces in which they occur and their relationship with the urban inequality of a heritage center. The case of Guanajuato (central-western Mexico) reveals the importance of urban, social and spatial conditions in determining the criminal occurrence. It was found that the most marginal areas adjacent to the main tourist area are more likely to present criminal activities against tourists. The conditions of urban deterioration but also the social, residential and economic transformations of the city determined the hot spots of tourist vulnerability.
