Abstract

The study aimed to estimate the prevalence of depression and to investigate the relationship between depression and different chronic pain intensities in the elderly. Participants (n=303) were interviewed in the waiting rooms of specialty clinics in the city of Goiânia/GO. CES-D and BPI were used to assess depression and pain intensity, respectively. ANOVA and Dunnet were used in the statistical analysis. The prevalence of depression was 66.0% (95% CI: 60.7-71.3); there was a significant difference between the average depression scores and the high pain intensity (p< 0.001). The high prevalence of depression found seems to be related to the intensity of the painful experience
