The giants of the Book of the Watchers (1 Enoch 1-36) offer elements of a monstrousness based on a construction of identities as opposed to abject otherness. Their voracity is seen as negative, to the extent of their un-mesuration. The spirits that emerge from them pose another scenario, based on their non-definition. These entities that escape conceptualisation more properly enable a greater possibility, in their grotesque aspect, which expands into the world, which is unbounded space. Voracity can thus be seen in a positive light, as openness to the world. In this text, we approach these monstrous and cannibalistic figures of 1 Enoch as elements that are reconfigured from a decolonial, carnivalesque gaze. They also enable a critical approach to the notions of the monstrous and the cannibal that projects their definition towards a more encompassing spectrum, linked to liminality and decentred from their threatening or abject aspects.
