Abstract

Consisting of lyrics and song, rap is an Afro-Diasporic musical genre that mobilizes and engages diverse subjects through peripheral culture. The “new condition of rap” as a category of analysis that helps us to understand new characteristics of this musical genre, allowed us to reflect on a possible “new religious condition” of rap. Thus, this article aims to 1) understand the “mythical-poetic modes” of Brazilian rap – the way in which national rap approaches religion in its lyrics and songs; 2) and “religion” or the “Theology of reexistence” as an essential characteristic of the “new condition of rap”, not yet covered by the category of analysis in question, created by sociologist Daniela Vieira dos Santos. We hope to contribute to the development of research in the “music and religion” interface, and more specifically, in the strengthening of the theme “rap and religion” within the Science of religion.
