Abstract

In the field of Political Science, religion has not consolidated itself as an analytically relevant phenomenon for understanding political institutions and their actors. We attribute this to the fact that many of the effects that come from religion have an indirect impact on political phenomena. From this reflection, we rescued the Weberian and Tocquevillean debate on the role of religion over capitalism and democracy, having as essence a concern with human freedom. We conclude that, while in Tocqueville religion has some power to safeguard human freedom, in Weberian reading, this does not happen, because when detaching from its foundations, religion finds itself powerless in the face of the new social order, of a new type of domination, the rational-legal.
