Abstract

The 1960s constituted a milestone for the emergence of musicological studies in the Northeast Region of Brazil. Based on the systematic studies promoted by the Pernambuco priest and professor Jaime Cavalcanti Diniz, new perspectives were revealed to the world, through the discovery of important musical activities in the main urban centers of that Region. Agents of this profuse and qualitative effervescence, many composers were identified and biographed, among them the figure of Luiz Álvares Pinto, one of the most expressive Brazilian musicians of the 18th century. Having traveled to study in Lisbon around 1740, in 1759, he returned to the cities of Olinda and Recife, when he committed himself to building a solid career, based on compositional activity, intellectual production, teaching and the defense of professional causes. This work intends to conceptually situate the aforementioned master, through an exposition of some facts that permeated his life and attributable work; namely, the trajectory that led, over the course of three centuries, to his most prominent work: Te Deum Laudamus, for voices, instruments and basso continuo
