Abstract

Proposed by Anders Ericsson, the General Theory of Expertise (TGE) regards deliberate practice as the gold standard for developing highly advanced skills across a wide range of domains. It is a type of practice based on models of strategies used by experienced individuals (experts), with the aim of refining pre-existing skills. It involves specific goals, full concentration, stepping out of one’s comfort zone, use of mental representations, and immediate feedback. The aim of this paper is to investigate the role of feedback in the development of expertise in the field of music. Feedback is defined as the act of providing the practitioner with input on their work to assess their performance and point out possible ways for them to continue evolving. The TGE also points out that at the early stages of skill development, feedback is usually provided by a teacher or tutor. However, from a certain phase onward, the practitioner becomes autonomous and begins to deliver feedback to themselves. Based on bibliographic research, results indicated that feedback plays an important role in the development of a musician’s expertise, since techniques to assist in self-regulation and the observation of one’s own progress are used.
