This article proposes to present the process of recognition of Ismael Nery as a brazilian modernist and surrealist artist, by Murilo Mendes and Mário Pedrosa, as well as the influence of Ismael Nery on muriliana aesthetics, which is evident in the poet’s literary production, as for his art collection. Exploring the contexts of the sociability networks developed around these intellectuals, it recovers the participation of Mário Pedrosa and Murilo Mendes, in the recognition of Nery, as well as the effort to preserve and safeguard his memory and especially his work, after his death. Through this act, Murilo Mendes contributed to consecrate the Ismael Nery, who for Mário Pedrosa “was more than a universal man – total artist”.
