The article focuses on the analysis of the latest polaroid photographs taken by Andrei Tarkovsky before leaving Russia and declaring political exile in Italy. The work of philosophers Susan Sontag and Helen Petrovsky will be integrated into the study to discuss the notion of photographic snapshot. Through the thoughts of the author Júlia Kristeva, the article intends to show the relationships established between the foreigner and the mourning represented by the loss of the homeland. The photos participate in this peculiar moment in Tarkovsky's life and illustrate, with their own fading and textures, the nebulous meaning present in the process of the decision to leave the Soviet Union and the experience of self-exile.
