Abstract

It deals with the ethnomusicological analysis between Mozarts 1791 Requiem, posthumous work, and Father José Maurício Nunes Garcia´s 1816 Requiem. Both works widely known, specially Mozarts, they have disseminated similarities concerning the use of motives and themes, movements construction and developmente, instrumentation and rant. However, there are peculiarities that make them different from each other, not usually addressed in comparatives analysis. The europeanism of the José Maurício´s work and his apparent tribute to Austrian composer is discussed in the historical and sociological scope, where the western concert classical music would have been transposed, in the way of the whole imported European culture to the tropics, without verify if the elements were genuine national. However, how could it be possible, if the nation itself would not be structured?
