This article analyzes the sound design of the film The Zone of Interest (Jonathan Glazer, 2023) based on three central concepts: acousmatism, soundtrack, and hyperorchestra. Acousmatism (Chion, 2008) refers to listening to sounds whose source is not visible in the scene. Integrated soundtrack (Kulezic-Wilson, 2019) and hyperorchestra (Casanelles, 2017) challenge the traditional division between music, sound effects, and speech, treating all sound elements in a musical and holistic way. Drawing on these approaches, the study investigates how the film evokes the horror of the Holocaust through an aesthetic experience marked by off-screen sonic violence. Based on figure-ground theory, the analysis explores strategies that modulate ethical and narrative tensions. The methodology combines a narrative literature review — including authors such as Chion, Brian Kane, James Buhler, Mark Kerins, and Jeff Smith — with film analysis of key sequences. Concepts such as ultrafield (Kerins, 2011) and causal listening (Schaeffer, 1966) help clarify the role of acousmatic sounds in constructing a soundscape in constant tension with the image. The integration of off-screen sounds, voices, and effects results in an integrated soundtrack that amplifies the ethical dimension of the narrative.
