From books to the screen: Harry Potter as a transmedia story

Abstract

The article identifies and evaluates elements of the Harry Potter story, originated in the of JK Rowling's book series, who turned it into a transmedia narrative. Through bibliographical research, we established the concept of transmedia storytelling from Jenkins (2009a), as a complex form of storytelling, related to the concepts of convergence and remediation. We establish that the magical world of Rowling becomes an extensive fictional universe created in multiple platforms, with each new text contributing differently and relevantly to the whole. We also determined that the creation of the Pottermore site demarcated the transmidiality of the series. We conclude that, from the printed book as media support, digital migration strategies were incorporated into the narrative, triggering new tools and strategies for its presentation to the public.
