Abstract

Introduction: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is an early risk factor for changes in neuropsychomotor development (NPMD), and its severity predisposes to functional, behavioral, sensory, and nutritional deficits in weight and height development in affected newborns. The General Movements Assessment (GMA) is an assessment tool for early identification of abnormal general movements in newborns, with high sensitivity and specificity for neurodevelopmental alterations. Thus, early identification of these changes allows for early interventions, improving the prognosis and quality of life of neonates in intensive care. Additionally, it enables the planning of actions at the three levels of health care, promoting prevention, protection, and recovery from these conditions. Objective: To analyze the quality of spontaneous movement of newborns (NBs) with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) compared to newborns without this diagnosis. Methods: An observational case-control study was conducted with users of the Unified Health System, with cases being newborns with BPD admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Premature newborns assessed by the General Movements Assessment (GMA) were included, and newborns who presented osteoarticular pathologies, congenital malformations of the Central Nervous System (CNS), use of vasoactive drugs and CNS depressants at the time of assessment were excluded. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, and to verify the association between general movements and BPD, the Chi-Square test or Fisher's exact test and binary logistic regression (α = 0.05) were used. Results: Of the 225 premature infants, 76 (33.8%) comprised the case group and 149 (66.2%) the control group. BPD and gestational age less than or equal to 32 weeks increased the chance of changes in spontaneous movement by 9.12 and 8.80 times, respectively. Conclusion: BPD increased the chance of changes in general movements, indicating that it negatively affected the CNS in the period of “preterm” and “wrinthing movements”.
