Abstract

Introduction: Chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus (SCCL) is an autoimmune inflammatory disease, with characteristic skin lesions. Intraoral manifestations are described and may have similar aspects to other lesions of autoimmune origin, highlighting the need for assessment and diagnosis of lesions in the oral mucosa by the dentist. Objective: To present a case of cutaneous lupus erythematosus with multiple oral manifestations, without simultaneous skin lesions, focusing on clinical, histopathological and serological exams to investigate systemic involvement. Case Report: A 54-year-old woman with a history of lupus attended the clinic with a lichenoid-like lesion on the lower lip and an extensive, erythematous area with reticular lines and asymptomatic was observed on the hard palate. Desquamative gingivitis was observed in the maxilla and mandible. There were lichenoid and pigmented areas in the jugal mucosa. Incisional biopsy was performed on the hard palate and histopathological analysis revealed a fragment of the oral mucosa showing hyperkeratosis and focal degeneration of the basal layer. Additional tests were requested which ruled out systemic involvement. Conclusion: This case highlights the diversity of oral manifestations in a patient with lupus and the importance of examining the oral mucosa, even in the absence of skin lesions, which are more common. The participation of the dental surgeon in the multidisciplinary team of patients undergoing treatment for lupus erythematosus is essential.
