TAYLOR SWIFT AND THE POETIC ADAPTATION OF LITERARY WORKS

INTERMEDIAL ANALYSIS OF 'THE HUNGER GAMES' AND 'WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING'

Abstract

This article examines the processes of intermedia transposition between literature and music through the analysis of the songs Safe & Sound, Eyes Open, and Carolina, composed and performed by Taylor Swift for the film adaptations of Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games and Delia Owens’ Where the Crawdads Sing. The starting point is the assumption that these songs not only accompany the films as a soundtrack, but also function as poetic-musical reinterpretations of the literary works, recreating atmospheres, narrative voices, and central emotions. The research is based on studies of the relationship between music and literature, with an emphasis on authors such as Solange Oliveira and Stevan Paul Scher, to analyze how musical language incorporates textual elements, establishing a creative and sensitive dialogue with the original narratives. Thus, the methodology of the article is qualitative and interpretive, based on a comparative textual analysis between the novels and the respective songs. By analyzing the lyrics, it was possible to conclude that the compositions are autonomous poetic forms that, in addition to accompanying the film adaptations, expand and deepen the symbolic, affective, and narrative meanings of the original novels.
