The Presence of Criminal Factions in Northeastern Brazil: Between Differences and Similarities

This dossier presents a diagram of the expansion, similarities, and differences of criminal factions in Northeastern Brazil, bringing together research by both young and experienced scholars who have addressed the theme from different theoretical, methodological, and empirical perspectives. The articles focus on the objects, symbolisms, and discourses of criminal factions that operate inside and outside prisons, describing moralities, practices, ethics, and markets, and questioning and/or problematizing new concepts in the field based on ethnographic work or on research that describes and analyzes the impacts on Public Security and Prison policies arising from the image of criminal factions in Northeastern Brazil.
