Abstract

Based on a life story interview with Portuguese director Edgar Pêra, this paper questions the relationship between art, communication, and biography. In the scope of the research, the interview is a core methodological option which encourages a reflection on ritual communication (related to time and memory) and challenges self-reflection on the role of the researcher, in a dialog built between interviewer and interviewee. Situating myself within a theoretical framework that has American Cultural Studies (James Carey) and pragmatism as references. Through a process in which fieldwork and theoretical reflection influence each other, I pretend to understand, rather than explain, what Edgar Pêra does and how he does it, thereby inferring the symbolic exchanges that introduce new discourses into the social whole, using art as a medium.
