Abstract

With the autoethnography and the results of my doctoral research, I developed my fi rst insights and refl ections
on the theoretical-methodological issues present in the sociology developed by W. E. B. Du Bois (1868-1963).
From this and with the possibility of organizing the Autoethnographies Dossier, I realized a rich opportunity
to present (albeit preliminarily) two ideas that gained strength in my studies, teaching and research. The fi rst
step is to present what I call the “epistemological roots of autoethnography” - that would be the identifi cation
of the epistemic-theoretical-methodological bases and/or characteristics of this method in seminal works by
Du Bois. And the second idea is to demonstrate how I constructed my autoethnographic operationalization or
what I call My Autoethnographic Doing in my doctoral work. Even though I know that this methodology has
a strong subjective character, my intention is to draw attention to the “objective processes” structured during
my research and analysis that further express the potentialities of this methodological resource. Finally, the
case of Caveira presents itself both as a way of unveiling the play of narratives that is present in our interaction
and as a means of reaffi rming the importance of the interactionist approach to racism and the experience of
discrimination.
