Abstract

The debate on teaching social sciences in basic education has expanded in recent years, accompanied by an increase in the number of master's theses and doctoral dissertations on this topic, especially in graduate programs in social sciences and education. In this article, we analyze the relationship between teaching of social sciences and stricto sensu graduate courses in Brazil, highlighting, on the one hand, the increase in research on the subject, on the other hand, the role of graduate courses in the initial and continuing teacher training. It is argued that, despite the area of sociology relegating the continuing teacher training to professional master's degrees, academic programs have taken on this role, which demands a new reflection on the place of this training in graduate studies.
