Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

Author Guidelines

TEORIA E CULTURA – AUTHOR GUIDELINES

MANUSCRIPT FORMAT

  • The manuscript must be prepared with page numbering.

  • Single spacing (1.0).

  • Font: Times New Roman, size 12.

  • Margins: 3 cm (left and top) and 2 cm (right and bottom), on A4 paper.


AUTHOR INFORMATION

  • Minimum degree for authorship: Master’s (ongoing or completed).

  • Biographical data must not appear anywhere in the manuscript submitted through the platform, in order to ensure double-blind peer review.

  • Biographical and institutional information must be filled in the Metadata section at the time of submission, including: highest academic degree, position, institutional affiliation, full address (street, city, ZIP/postal code, state, country), and email.

  • This information is mandatory for the manuscript to proceed to review by the Editorial Board.


LANGUAGES AND TYPES OF CONTRIBUTIONS

Manuscripts are accepted in Portuguese, English, Spanish, and French.
Possible contributions include:

  • Articles: 5,000 to 9,000 words.

  • Essays: 3,000 to 5,000 words.

  • Reviews: 2,000 to 3,000 words (only of academic works published up to 1 year before the submission date).

  • Interviews and translations: follow the parameters of articles and may exceed the limit at the discretion of the editorial board.


TITLES AND SUBTITLES

  • Must be concise and informative.

  • Written in bold, font size 12, lowercase.

  • The same pattern applies to subtitles.


ABSTRACT AND KEYWORDS

  • Articles in Portuguese: abstract (150–200 words), title, and 3 to 5 keywords in Portuguese, plus an English translation.

  • Articles in English: abstract, title, and keywords in English, plus a Portuguese translation.

  • Articles in Spanish or French: three versions of the abstract, title, and keywords — in the original language, in Portuguese, and in English.


FOOTNOTES

  • Use only when essential to understanding the text.

  • Font: Times New Roman, size 10.


ABBREVIATIONS AND ACRONYMS

  • Define at first occurrence in the text, followed by the abbreviation in parentheses.

  • Example: Ministério da Educação (MEC).


ILLUSTRATIONS AND TABLES

  • Images (figures and photographs) must have a minimum resolution of 300 dpi, in JPG or TIF format, with at least 8 cm width.

  • The source of the image must be indicated.


CITATIONS (according to ABNT NBR 10520:2023)

  • Author-date system with capitalized initials: (Freire, 1982) or Freire (1982).

  • Latin expressions such as et al., apud, idem must be in italics.

  • Use et al. for sources with more than three authors.

  • Short direct quotations (up to 3 lines): within the paragraph, in double quotation marks, font size 12.

  • Long direct quotations (more than 3 lines): in an indented paragraph, font size 11, single spacing, with a recommended 4 cm left indent.

  • Indicate page numbers when applicable: (Freire, 1982, p. 45).

  • For unpaginated texts (such as e-books), use alternative locators (chapter, section, etc.).


REFERENCES (according to ABNT NBR 6023:2025)

  • Include only works actually cited in the text.

  • List in alphabetical order by the surname of the first author.

  • Titles in italics.

  • Essential elements: author(s), title, edition, place, publisher, date.

  • Complementary elements when applicable (DOI, e-locator, ISBN, ISSN, etc.).

  • The author’s name must be repeated in every entry, without the use of an underline or dash.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Submissions must meet the following requirements:

  1. The work is original, unpublished, and not under review by another journal.

  2. The file is in Microsoft Word, OpenOffice, or RTF format.

  3. URLs for references have been provided whenever possible.

  4. The text follows the formatting above (single spacing, font size 12, italics instead of underlining, figures and tables inserted in the text body).

  5. The manuscript complies with these Author Guidelines.
