Abstract

Since theremin, one of the first fully electronic musical instruments, the relationship between electronic music (EM) and science fiction (SF) has always been close. In the 1951 film The Day the Earth Stood Still, composer Bernard Herrmann included, in his score for the soundtrack, the instrument patented in 1928 by Leon Theremin. Forbidden Planet (1956) was the first film whose soundtrack, by Bebe and Louis Barron, was composed entirely of electronic sounds. From then on, the relationship became increasingly intimate, and today there are countless examples of SF cinematographic works that use EM in their soundtracks. This article seeks to understand if there was a reverse path, that is, if the development of EM was linked to the imagery related to SF themes.
