Abstract

The article presents partial results of an investigation and aims to understand how mathematics, in interaction with digital technologies, is represented by second-grade elementary school students. The study adopts a qualitative and exploratory approach, grounded in the Theory of Social Representations and in the Humans-with-Media construct, understanding knowledge as produced through the interaction between people and media. Data production consisted of a questionnaire, semi-structured interviews, the Projective Technique of Free Drawing, and the Free Word Association Technique, using the inducing term “mathematics with digital technologies.” The investigation was based on Similarity Analysis and Prototypical Analysis, revealing that students are in the process of constructing mathematical meanings, with indications of a social representation of mathematics associated with numbers and basic operations. The social representation of mathematics with digital technologies plays a central role, guiding meanings, practices, and the ways in which students in the literacy process represent, learn, and do mathematics.
