Psychofunctional symptomatology in infants and young mothers’ perceptions about conjugality

A cross-sectional, qualitative and comparative study, which investigated the perception of young mothers in relation to conjugality and the partner's performance as a father, in the presence or absence of marital maladjustment and psychofunctional symptoms in the infant. Ten young mothers (18-21 years old) with babies aged 6-18 months answered quantitative instruments and a semi-structured interview. We compared the reports of the contrasting groups (G1 and G2) through thematic analysis. In G1, dissatisfaction with the support received from the partner and the father-baby relationship stood out, unlike in G2, suggesting a possible impact of perceived marital conflicts on parenting and on the manifestation of psychofunctional symptoms in infants.
