The objective was to understand the relationship between demographic, economic, clinical and disease perception aspects with the mental suffering of 113 adults with DM1 aged 18 years and over. Participants answered an online questionnaire containing: Diabetes Distress Scale and the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire. The results of correlation tests and comparison of means showed that participants with greater emotional distress and stress related to the treatment regimen had lower individual income and belonged to lower social classes. These scores were positively associated with both emotional and cognitive representations of the disease as being more threatening.
