Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the meanings attributed to marijuana use by individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia. This is a qualitative study, with people in treatment at a public service specialized in alcohol and drugs. Among the meanings, were identified: 1) For some people, the marijuana use means the possibility of experiencing pleasure and well-being; 2) Discourses about the influence of marijuana on the onset and/or worsening of schizophrenia symptoms. 3) Other meanings attributed referred to the social consequences and the breaking of family and work ties. 4) For some people, the use would be associated with the discrimination and illegality.
