From the sixties to copaganda: Turn! Turn! Turn! as a device for historical activation and symbolic redemption in Cold Case

This paper proposes a reflection on the intertextual relations between popular music, audiovisual media, and historical context through an analysis of the song Turn! Turn! Turn! (The Byrds). The objective is to understand the “social biography” of this song, a concept proposed by Mendívil (2013), demonstrating how it acquires symbolic density and becomes linked to the collective memory of the 1960s and 1970s and to civil rights movements. The methodology employed combines a bibliographic review on the use of songs (Fraile, 2014; Kassabian, 2001) and on the police procedural genre (Scaggs, 2005; Messent, 2013) with an analysis of the song's trajectory through a mapping of its uses in US film and television productions. This broader analytical exercise then enables an examination of the closing scene of the episode A Time to Hate, from the series Cold Case, arguing that the use of Turn! Turn! Turn! within the police procedural operates as a device for activating memories. It is concluded that, by articulating the song with the visual elements of the scene, the narrative gives the resolution of the crime a sense of ethical redemption and historical reparation, aligning itself with the logic of copaganda (Baron, 2023) in the positive reconstruction of the image of the police forces.
