Abstract

This article examines the ways in which contemporary psycholinguistics has incorporated pragmatic factors into its theoretical and methodological models. To do so, it follows a historical trajectory that connects two central discussions: the pragmatic turn in linguistic studies, which repositions language as a situated and social practice (Austin, 1990; Grice, 1975; Labov, 2008), and the consolidation of psycholinguistics as an experimental discipline, originally linked to formalist and mentalist models (Oliveira; Name; Mercedes, 2023). Based on this background, the article analyzes how psycholinguistics has sought to integrate contextual, inferential, and interactional aspects into the study of language processing, through notions such as joint action (Clark, 1996), embodied cognition (Gibbs, 1994, 2006), and the use of experimental paradigms more sensitive to language in use (Tanenhaus et al., 1995). The article also highlights Brazilian studies (Strey, 2016; Kenedy; Silva, 2024), which point to this movement, suggesting a reconfiguration of the field that does not break with its cognitive foundations but rather expands them toward a situated approach to language.
