In this work, we investigate the meaning effects produced by the use of causal connectives “portanto”, “por isso” and “consequentemente” in argumentative dissertations written in the context of the Exame Nacional do Ensino Médio (ENEM). Anchored in studies developed by Ferrari (2015; 2019) on the use of causal connectives in Brazilian Portuguese, we examine the construal built in the texts that compose our corpus, proceeding to an investigation of the emergence of the phenomenon of subjectivity - the insertion that the author makes of himself in the enunciative scene described - in front of the uttered causality relations. In this way, it was possible to understand the differences in the levels of subjectivity instantiated by the use of each of the analyzed connectives. With these results, we intend to provide the foundations for future reflections on the teaching of cohesive resources in basic education, aiming at planning pedagogical practices capable of educating critical readers and speakers/authors aware of their lexical choices.
