THE LEX LICINIA MUCIA AND THE SOCIAL WAR: VIOLENCE AND IDENTITY IN THE PROCESS OF ITALIAN UNIFICATION UNDER THE ROMAN REPUBLIC
Keywords:
Lex Licinia Mucia, Social war, Proccess of Italian IntegrationAbstract
The history of the Roman Republic was riddled with conflicts at the core of which, generally, laid the issue of citizenship. However, in attempting to prevent immigration to Rome and the subsequent acquisition of citizenship by its allies and conquered communities, the Roman magistrates repeatedly approved legislative measures dismissing these peoples from Roman civic life. Approved in 95 BC, the Lex Licinia Mucia thus aimed to expel these individuals from the city of Rome: which resulted in the Social War a few years later. Therefore, in this article, we discuss the painful steps that led to Italian integration in the Roman Republic, starting with the Lex Licinia Mucia and culminating in the implosion of the Social War.
