Author Guidelines

INSTRUCTIONS FOR MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION AND SUBMISSION

These guidelines are intended to inform authors about the standards adopted by the Revista de Enfermagem da UFJF for manuscript evaluation and the publication process. These instructions are based on the Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing, and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Journals (Vancouver style), developed by the ICMJE.

The Revista de Enfermagem da UFJF follows editorial practices aligned with international indexing criteria, including principles of transparency, scientific integrity, open science, and long-term digital preservation.

The electronic system is programmed to receive manuscripts when all fields and metadata are completed, along with attached documents (mandatory documents), namely:

  1. Completed Author Checklist by the author;
  2. Copy of the Research Ethics Committee opinion or a statement requesting its waiver in cases where the manuscript type does not include such a recommendation;
  3. Letter to the editor. (Cover Letter) Pay attention to each section according to the guidelines in the checklist;
  4. Title Page, as per the guidelines in the checklist;
  5. File of the article itself properly formatted according to the Journal of Nursing Template. This document should contain the manuscript to be submitted, WITHOUT AUTHORS' IDENTIFICATION. Pay attention to each section of the manuscript according to the guidelines in the checklist.
  6. Open Science Statement, to ensure transparency and reproducibility of the results.

Confirmation of manuscript receipt will occur after verification of the documentation, and requests for resolving pending issues and corrections must be addressed within the timeframe specified in the notification. If these requests are not met in a timely manner, the submission will be automatically canceled.

JOURNAL SECTIONS

Each issue will include the following structure: editorial, original articles, review articles, case reports, experience reports, reflection articles, and review protocols (scoping or systematic).

We are currently accepting submissions for:

Original Articles
Systematic Reviews
Scoping Reviews
Case Reports

We are NOT currently accepting submissions for:

Integrative Reviews
Reflection Articles
Experience Reports
Review Protocols
Editorials

All submitted manuscripts undergo double-blind peer review.

Editorial Policy: The journal adopts a double-blind peer review model, ensuring impartiality and confidentiality throughout the entire editorial process. The Revista de Enfermagem da UFJF prioritizes the publication of original, unpublished articles aimed at disseminating the results of original research, while also accepting reviews, case reports, experience reports, thematic reflections, and editorials. Its unpublished content is published in regular or special issues and is always preceded by the peer review process. Partial or total submission of content to another journal is not permitted, nor is its reproduction without the formal consent of the Editor, except for abstracts or preliminary reports published in the proceedings of scientific meetings.

Review Process: The journal uses an electronic management system for the publication process, in which submissions are assigned a numerical protocol (identification number) when authors submit their manuscripts online. Authors may track the progress of their submission either through communication with the Editor responsible for the manuscript or by monitoring the SEER system using the protocol number assigned at submission.

All manuscripts are initially evaluated by the Editor-in-Chief regarding their SUITABILITY to the FOCUS and SCOPE of the Revista de Enfermagem da UFJF. If deemed appropriate for the journal, the manuscript is forwarded to the Associate Editors to begin the editorial workflow, which consists of the following stages:

1) Initial Evaluation: verification of FORMATTING and STRUCTURE requirements using the checklist; confirmation of the required documentation; and assessment of the manuscript’s relevance and merit for Nursing and related fields.

At this stage, manuscripts that do NOT comply with the guidelines due to incompleteness or inadequacy are returned to the authors for correction, as indicated by the editor responsible for the editorial workflow. If the requested revisions are not addressed after the second round of corrections, the manuscript will be archived and, if the authors wish to pursue publication, it must be resubmitted, initiating a new submission process.

2) Peer Review: only manuscripts that meet the previous requirements will be sent for evaluation by reviewers with recognized thematic and methodological expertise (at least two), using the instrument adopted by the journal. Articles will be assessed for merit, originality, methodological and content relevance, suitability for publication, and relevance to Nursing and related fields.

The review process is confidential, with the identities of both ad hoc reviewers and authors concealed. In cases of disagreement between reviewers in the first round, the manuscript will be sent for a third evaluation. If a conflict of interest is identified on the part of a reviewer, the manuscript will be assigned to another evaluator.

The average timeframe for peer review is expected to be 3 to 6 weeks, although this may vary depending on reviewer availability.

3) Editorial Board Evaluation: final deliberative stage with authority to decide on the acceptance or rejection of the manuscript, the need for revisions, and the establishment of the publication schedule (at which point authors will receive confirmation that the manuscript is in press).

After each of these stages, manuscripts may be accepted, revised, or rejected, and all editorial decisions will be communicated to the corresponding author. Reviewer reports will be made available to the corresponding author, who will have ten (10) days to return the revised manuscript addressing the requested changes. After this period, if no response is received, the manuscript will be archived and may be resubmitted if the author remains interested. The same procedure applies in cases of manuscript rejection.

SUBMISSION

The Revista de Enfermagem da UFJF follows the recommendations of COPE, the ICMJE, and the Singapore Declaration. Every manuscript will be submitted for evaluation exclusively through the online system at https://periodicos.ufjf.br/index.php/enfermagem/submission/wizard in Portuguese and English.

Authors (up to eight) can access the step-by-step submission tutorial. The responsibility for the content, writing, opinions, and concepts contained in the manuscript lies entirely with the authors, not necessarily reflecting the position/opinion of the Editorial Board of the Revista de Enfermagem da UFJF.

All authors must provide their ORCID at the time of submission, available from: ORCID

In the event of acceptance and if the authors wish to enhance the impact of their manuscript, translation into another language (English and/or Spanish) must be arranged in accordance with the recommendations of the Revista de Enfermagem da UFJF, with all associated costs borne by the authors. The Revista de Enfermagem da UFJF does not assume responsibility for grammatical errors and therefore reserves the right to request language revision from the authors when necessary.

Proofs (Proofreading)

Upon acceptance of the manuscript for publication, the proofs (in PDF format) will be sent to the corresponding author for review, verification, and necessary corrections, which must be returned to the responsible editor, duly revised, within seventy-two (72) hours for final approval.

The corrections at this stage are limited to spelling and verification of illustrations. Extensive changes that imply modification of content will be re-evaluated by the reviewers, resulting in delays in publication.

If no response is received from the author within 72 hours, the Editor will consider the submitted proof version as the final version of the manuscript.

PUBLICATION

Articles are published in open access online in Portuguese and English, with abstracts in three languages (Portuguese, English, and Spanish), with the option of full-text publication in one or two additional languages.

The average time from submission to publication is estimated at six to eight months, due to deadline extensions requested by reviewers. The first decision is typically issued in approximately 6 weeks.

PLAGIARISM SCREENING

All manuscripts are submitted to similarity detection tools (iThenticate) and are evaluated for plagiarism, self-plagiarism, and textual overlap prior to peer review.

ENDOGENY

The journal adopts policies to reduce institutional endogeny (up to 20%), seeking geographic, institutional, and international diversity among authors and reviewers.

OPEN DATA POLICY

The journal encourages open science and recommends that authors make the underlying research data available in reliable public repositories. Manuscripts must include a Data Availability Statement, indicating where and how the data can be accessed or justifying its unavailability.

CONFLICT OF INTEREST

All authors, reviewers, and editors must explicitly declare any financial, institutional, or personal conflicts of interest that may influence the results or interpretation of the manuscript. The conflict of interest statement must be included on the title page of the manuscript and will subsequently be published with the article.

PREPRINT POLICY

The journal accepts the submission of manuscripts previously deposited in recognized preprint servers (e.g., SciELO Preprints, medRxiv, bioRxiv), and this is not considered prior publication.

Authors must provide the DOI or link to the preprint at the time of submission.

Rejection Rate

The rejection rate of the Revista de Enfermagem da UFJF is 68% (reference: 2025).

Manuscript Archiving Policy

The journal adopts permanent digital preservation policies, ensuring continuous access to published content.

Articles are preserved through reliable digital archiving systems such as PKP Preservation Network (PKP PN), LOCKSS, and/or CLOCKSS.

ERRATA

Requests for corrections must be submitted within a maximum of 30 days after article publication, as stated in the “About” section.

The names and addresses provided in this journal will be used exclusively for the services provided by this publication and will not be made available for other purposes or to third parties.

This journal offers immediate open access to its content, following the principle that making scientific knowledge freely available to the public provides greater democratization of knowledge. The journal does not charge submission or processing fees for the articles reviewed.

According to COPE, the duties and responsibilities are as follows:

Editors:

Publication Decisions

The editor is responsible for deciding which articles submitted to the journal will be published. The editor will evaluate manuscripts without considering the authors' race, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, ethnic origin, citizenship, or political philosophy. The decision will be based on the importance, originality, and clarity of the article, as well as the validity of the study and its relevance to the journal's scope. Current legal requirements regarding defamation, copyright infringement, and plagiarism will also be considered.

Confidentiality

The editor and any editorial staff member must not disclose any information about a submitted manuscript to anyone other than the corresponding author, reviewers, potential reviewers, other editorial advisors, and the editor as appropriate.

Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest

Unpublished materials disclosed in a submitted article will not be used by the editor or the editorial board members for their own research purposes without the author’s explicit written consent.

Source Acknowledgment

Editors must use appropriate software to identify instances where relevant published work cited in the article is missing in the reference section. The software analysis results should indicate whether observations or arguments derived from other publications are accompanied by the respective source. Editors will notify the author of any substantial similarity or overlap between the manuscript under consideration and any other published article of which they are aware.

Reviewers:

Contribution to Editorial Decisions

The peer review process assists the editor and the editorial board in making editorial decisions and may also serve the author in improving the manuscript.

Promptness

Any selected reviewer who feels unqualified to review the research reported in a manuscript or knows that timely review will be impossible should notify the editor and withdraw from the review process.

Confidentiality

All manuscripts received for review must be treated as confidential documents. They must not be disclosed to or discussed with others except as authorized by the editor.

Standards of Objectivity

Reviews should be conducted objectively. Personal criticism of the author is inappropriate. Reviewers should express their views clearly with supporting arguments.

Source Acknowledgment

Reviewers should identify instances where relevant published work cited in the article is missing in the reference section. They should indicate whether observations or arguments derived from other publications are accompanied by the respective source. Reviewers will notify the editor of any substantial similarity or overlap between the manuscript under consideration and any other published article of which they are personally aware.

Disclosure and Conflict of Interest

Privileged information or ideas obtained through peer review must be kept confidential and not used for personal advantage. Reviewers should not consider manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest resulting from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships or connections with any authors, companies, or institutions associated with the papers.

Authors:

Manuscript Standards

Authors of original research manuscripts should present an accurate account of the work performed, as well as an objective discussion of its significance. Underlying data should be represented accurately in the article. The article should contain sufficient details and references to allow others to replicate the work. Fraudulent or knowingly inaccurate statements constitute unethical behavior and are unacceptable.

Data Access and Retention

Authors may be asked to provide the raw data of their study together with the article for editorial review and should be prepared to make the data publicly available, if possible. In any case, authors should ensure accessibility to such data for other competent professionals for at least ten years after publication (preferably via an institutional data repository or another data center), provided that confidentiality of participants can be protected and legal rights regarding proprietary information do not prevent its release.

Originality, Plagiarism, and Source Acknowledgment

Authors should submit only entirely original works and properly cite the work and/or words of others. Publications that have been influential in determining the nature of the reported work should also be cited.

Multiple, Redundant, or Concurrent Publication

In general, papers describing essentially the same research should not be published in more than one journal. Submitting the same work to more than one journal constitutes unethical publishing behavior and is unacceptable. Additionally, the UFJF Nursing Journal establishes a limit of three (3) manuscript submissions per author, per publication volume.
Authors may only use the same results in other publications by clearly indicating this journal as the original publication venue. Since we are an open-access journal, free use of the articles in educational and scientific applications is permitted as long as the source is cited according to the CC-BY Creative Commons license.
