TRANSFORMATIONS IN THE WORLD OF WORK AND TEACHERS’ MENTAL HEALTH

A REVIEW OF THE NATIONAL LITERATURE

Abstract

This article presents a systematic review of the national academic literature on the effects of transformations in the world of work on teaching activities, with an emphasis on the repercussions on the subjectivity and mental health of teachers. The research is part of a recently defended master's thesis, based on Historical-Dialectical Materialism and Historical-Cultural Psychology. The methodology included the analysis of theses and dissertations published between 2000 and 2023, located in BDTD, CAPES, and RiUFES. The results indicate a significant growth in productions on the topic in recent decades, highlighting the intensification of work, the precarization of labor conditions, and the loss of faculty autonomy as structural factors of illness. The productions also highlight discourses that individualize suffering and disregard its historical and socioeconomic determinants. Although there are studies that address the psychosocial impacts of teaching work, there is still a lack of critical analyzes that relate the processes of subjectivation to neoliberal reforms in education. It is concluded that the psychological illness of teachers is socially determined, requiring integrated approaches and public policies for the appreciation and health of the profession.
