Abstract

William Faulkner's The sound and the fury is considered one of the most important novels of modernist literature. Divided into four parts, the work narrates the economic downfall of the Compsons, a white Southern family that collapses due to the maladjustment of its members in the face of the social and historical reorganization of the Southern United States in the early 20th century. This article therefore deals with the representations of masculinity in the narrative of one of the novel’s narrators, the greedy Jason Compson. Jason is a white Southern man, amoral and resentful, who conveys racist, sexist, and xenophobic discourses in his statements. This work supports the hypothesis that Jason can be analyzed through the concept of crisis of masculinity, which consists of feelings of anxiety, anguish, and male inadequacy, often channeled into anger and frustration in the face of social, historical, and cultural transformations related to gender, race, and sexuality, both specifically in the southern United States and more broadly.
