In Junji Ito's Uzumaki, the spiral emerges as a multifaceted symbol whose exploration transcends the horror narrative to encompass metaphysical, psychological, and scientific aspects. This study analyzes the work from an interdisciplinary perspective, relating it to the fragmentation of knowledge, as discussed by Hilton Japiassu (1976), Edgar Morin's (2015) proposals on complexity in education, and Maria Cândida Moraes's (2004) vision of the emergent educational paradigm. The spiral, in its ambiguous nature, becomes the central force of fear in the narrative, representing both the expansion of the universe and the collapse of the subject. The research investigates how the manga visually illustrates the limitations of fragmented knowledge, or Japiassu's "pathology of knowledge," and reinforces the need for an integrative approach to teaching and interpreting reality. The town of Kurôzu-cho is read as an allegory for the disintegration of modern rationality, reflecting the "nebulous spiral of crises" described by Morin. The article concludes that the spiral is a representation of horror and entrapment, but also an aesthetic and philosophical proposal for the reconstruction of knowledge, representing the movement of return and renewal that demands a break from the spirals of stagnation.
