Abstract

This paper investigates, using the Marvel Universe in its comic book and cinematic publications, the intersections and differences between the concepts of archive (Derecho, 2006) and expanded storyworlds (Autor; Indrusiak, 2021), as well as the relevance of understanding them as polysystems, as proposed by Itamar Even-Zohar (1978). The text is divided in four sections. The first aims to clarify the article’s key concepts: “expanded storyworlds”, “archive” and “polysystems”. Next, there is a brief overview of the storyworlds to be analyzed, both in the Marvel Comics (MC) and the Cinematic Universe (MCU). In the third section, we discuss how the polysystem hypothesis can be applied to these objects. Finally, we explore another way to integrate these storyworlds: when consumed through the lens of the existence of multiverses, thematized within the narratives themselves, it becomes possible to integrate what would previously be considered an archive into a single storyworld. In conclusion, we argue that framing expanded storyworlds and archives as polysystems contributes to a more detailed understanding of two narrative phenomena that result from the complex relationships among various media products.
