Abstract

This work is based on the concern aroused by the work Retratos Fantasmas (2023), by Brazilian filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho, a documentary that can be read through the lens of an essay. Thus, the work will start from the notion of essayism in the audiovisual field to examine how essay films elaborate the clues that a given space imprints on memory, through its enunciation devices (Monterrubio, 2019), and the filmic elements it uses. To this end, we intend to establish an analysis of the film in question based on the notions of Trace (Gagnebin, 2006, 2012) (Ginzburg, 2012) combined with studies on the person-character (Bernardet, 2003) and narration present in these films.
