Abstract

This article aims to discuss the possibilities of allegorical reading of The plague of the ruminants: both the short novel of José J. Veiga and the screenplay of Luiz Sérgio Person and Jean-Claude Bernardet. Frequently understood as an allegory of the seizure of power by the militaries, The plague of the ruminants was also read as in an intertextual perspective by the duo of adaptators, who have proposed a dialogue with authors such as Ionesco and Camus, whose literary works have direct connection with the idea of a epidemics. That is our point of departure to propose reading The plague of the ruminants as a sort of harbinger of the present historical moment, of authoritarian rupture accompanied by the sanitary crisis connected to the Covid-19 outbreak.
