Considering the importance of better substantiate the attention on the physical therapy TENS analgesia, was undertaken to review the literature. The present study is characterized as systematic literature review covering publications indexed in databases Scielo and Medline between 1998 and 2009. Inclusion criteria were clinical trials available in full, in Portuguese or English, whose sample was composed of women aged between 19 and 44 years. Only three studies met the inclusion criteria. The methodological inconsistencies, which prevented the determination of the parameters most suitable for TENS analgesia in obstetric care. It is inferred therefore that the few therapists who work in this area, when using TENS for analgesia do based on clinical evidence, because the science is still inconclusive. This reinforces the need for experimental studies. In this regard, special care should be the choice of parameters of electrical stimulation for analgesia in obstetric care.
