To discuss about themes such as death, loss, and grief is a complex task, although these are experiences that are part of the human existence. Grief can be understood as an individual's emotional response to the rupture of an important bond, which generates physical, behavioral, and social reactions. This literature review sought to reflect on the progress, difficulties, and limitations of the scientific and clinical approach. Therefore, a critical analysis of the understandings about grief, as well as challenges for the training of health professionals and the support for the bereaved. Although progress has been observed in the approach to mourning, the importance of new studies to improve the interventions targeted to this population is highlighted.
