Abstract

This article addresses the discussion and practice of abscract painting among visual artistsas sociate dwith the Sociedade de Belas Artes Antônio Parreiras, of Juiz de Fora – Minas Gerais –, duringthe late 1940’s untiltheearly 1960’s, periodwhenbrazilianartwasgoingthroughdeepchangesduetotheemerging debates aboutmodernand abstract artthatoccurredthen in theurbanscene.Mario Pedrosa’sanalysisofthebrazilianartisticsceneoftheperiod, markedbytheemergenceofartbiennialsandthecreationofthefirstmuseumsofmodernart in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro isthe base ofthisstudy, that aim stoverifytheadherencetomodernand abstract art, as well as tounderstandtheresistanceto abstractionismby local painters in the light of the emergence of the political and aesthetic project put in motion by other Brazilian urban centers.
