Temples of progress: reading institutions in 19th century Brazil

This article seeks the links between the creation of reading institutions in 19° Century Brazil, and the dominating progress ideology, as guide of these creations. Libraries, newspapers and schools were created both as symbols and instruments of progress, as part of a civilizing process, guided by European standards.
