Temples of progress: reading institutions in 19th century Brazil

Abstract

This article seeks the links between the creation of reading institutions in 19th Century Brazil, and the dominating progress ideology, as guide of these creations. Libraries, newspapers and schools were created both as symbols and instruments of progress, as part of a civilizing process, guided by European standards.
