The most emblematic cases of sexual abuse involving priests gained significant attention in major global media outlets, such as the American newspaper Boston Sunday Globe. Following this event, there was a discursive explosion on the subject, with various renowned global media outlets reporting similar cases. In Brazil, the scenario was no different. In July 2019, Veja magazine published three reports addressing similar occurrences in the state of São Paulo. Considering the discursive status of this social and journalistic event, we aim to provide an enunciative description that takes as its starting point the power relations at work in media discourse to interrogate the constitution of news discursive practices in the production of sexual abuse as a discursive reference. More specifically, drawing on theoretical and methodological support from Foucauldian discourse studies, this article problematizes journalistic discourse, particularly that of Veja, and its role as a power device by reporting sexual abuse practices committed within a secular religious institution such as the Catholic Church. The corpus of analysis consists of three reports, all selected based on the outlet's relevance in covering cases of sexual abuse committed by priests. Furthermore, the magazine in question plays a significant role in shaping public opinion and mediating between the public and private spheres, especially regarding institutions of great power, such as the Catholic Church. This makes Veja a strategic medium for understanding power and truth relations within media discourse.
