This paper concerns Patricia Highsmith's novel 'Carol' and presents the expression 'flung out of space' in its two instances in the novel as its primary focus of study. Our goal is to analyse the phrase in question from a semantic perspective, considering the contrasts of meaning according to speech context and the influence of connotation in the final meaning of the utterance. To reach such finality, the analysis was supported by authors Cançado (2008), Ribeiro (2016), Pinto (2016), Marques (2001), Fiorin e Savioli (2007), Searle (1995; 2002), Ricoeur (1976), and Moraes and Galiazzi (2007). The selected excerpt was examined under the lens of Semantics and of the method proposed by the two latter authors just cited. The study confirmed our original hypothesis that there are two different meanings to the same phrase, each contained in a different context in which it occurs, and each being conditioned by distinct textual, lexical, and semantic factors.
