Academic reading is not only a fundamental skill in higher education but also a complex social practice involving educators and researchers in its analysis and development. This research aims to analyze the reading practices revealed in activities carried out by first-period Computer Science students in the Portuguese Language (LPT) course. The study is grounded in the understanding of academic literacies (Lea & Street, 2006; Street, 2010; Fiad, 2011; Fischer, 2007) and reading as a social practice (Afdal, Spernes, & Hoff-Jenssen, 2023; Baker et al., 2019). The results reveal that first-year students, despite having little explicit instruction about the studied genre—summary—use appropriate reading and writing practices to produce summaries, such as synthesis and objectivity. This demonstrates that through the approach of academic literacies, these students negotiate positions that sometimes reject and sometimes accept the legitimized positions.
