The Brazilian Sugar in Portuguese Africa

The case of Recifenses of Moçâmedes

Abstract

The article seeks to analyze the episode of two groups of Portuguese-Brazilians who migrate with the help of the Portuguese government from the city of Recife, capital of the province of Pernambuco, to the region of Namibe and Huíla in Angola in 1849. Within the new model colonial implanted by the Portuguese government in Africa they try to establish a system of cultivation of sugar cane based on the great property and the slave labor force as existing in Brazil. This episode shows the interactions between Brazil, Africa and Portugal in the mid-nineteenth century.
