From development to segregation: The urbanization process in Triunfo – PE in the 20th century

Abstract

This article investigates the urbanization process in Triunfo - PE during the first half of the 20th century, problematizing how this period, promoted social and spatial segregation, especially in the Alto da Boa Vista neighborhood, inhabited mainly by descendants of formerly enslaved people. Its objective is to analyze the segregation of the Alto da Boa Vista neighborhood in the urbanization process of Triunfo – PE, in the first half of the 20th century. The justification for this work lies in the need to reveal the racist practices of exclusion in the municipality’s history through the lens of urbanization. The methodology combines documentary research, theoretical texts, and interviews with local residents, seeking to articulate memory (Le Goff, 2011), lived experience, and the materiality of space. The hypothesis is that urbanization in Triunfo, while consolidating symbols of modernity, reinforced historical inequalities.
