Abstract

In his prose and graphic arts, Millôr Fernandes (1923-2012) mobilizes several cultural matrices to interpret the national reality of the 20th and 21st centuries, raising questions about political regimes, hierarchies, social organization and gender dynamics in a distension of space and time. Through the analysis of the reception of the theogonic myth in the fables “A caixa (ou que outro nome tenha) de Pandora” and “O fogo”, we intend to elucidate the artifice of reworking and of the usage of the classical paradigm in the author’s lines of contestation. Taken primarily from Hesiodic literature, Millôr’s particular treatment of Pandora and Prometheus highlights questions about the dynamics of gender in Western society and the formation of the Brazilian ethos, seeking to denounce, through the distorted parodic allegory of Hesiodic creation, the ills that permeate this author’s time.
