In this paper, we investigate the reception of Classical Antiquity through archaeological-style jewelry developed by Italian goldsmiths throughout the 19th century. With the discovery of gold jewelry in archaeological sites of the ancient Greco-Roman world, pieces that copied or were inspired by them were produced, notably by the prestigious Castellani workshop in Rome. However, the relationship of these goldsmiths with the archaeological jewelry of ancient peoples was shaped by the political climate in the Italian peninsula during the Risorgimento and the establishment of the Kingdom of Italy. Thus, through Reception Studies, we aim to outline the trajectory of the Castellani workshop through its productions in order to analyze the interpretations of jewelry from the ancient past, the reconfigurations and possible purposes of the new pieces.
